Buckle Up, I Stay Alive reinforces enforcement of seatbelt and helmet use

Jornal O Almeirinense7 September 2026 at 10:23

The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the Republican National Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP) are promoting between September 8 and 14 the ninth campaign of the 2026 National Enforcement Plan, with the slogan "Cinto-me Vivo". The initiative aims to reinforce enforcement and awareness of the correct use of seatbelts, child restraint systems and helmets. Security forces will be on the ground in various districts, including Santarém, where simultaneous enforcement and awareness actions are taking place.

The campaign emphasizes that these safety devices only protect effectively when they are suitable for the user and used correctly. The goal is to alert drivers and passengers to the importance of always adopting these safety practices.

The data presented in the campaign is revealing: a child restraint system correctly used can reduce the risk of death by about 71% in babies and 54% in children between 1 and 4 years old. Regarding helmets, when properly tightened and adjusted, they reduce the risk of death in case of accident by 40%.

Between 2021 and 2024, 8,210 passengers traveling without a seatbelt were detected, highlighting the continuous need for awareness on this road safety issue.
