IPMA registers magnitude 2.6 earthquake off the coast of Faro

Postal do Algarve7 September 2026 at 10:11

A magnitude 2.6 earthquake on the Richter scale was registered on Sunday, September 6, at 11:15, with its epicenter located about 30 kilometers southwest of Faro. The tremor was detected by the stations of the Continental Seismic Network and reported by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere.

At the time of the statement's preparation, IPMA had not received any information confirming that the earthquake had been felt by the population.

The institute explained that the location of an earthquake's epicenter results from a complex physical and mathematical process, dependent on available data, algorithms used, and seismic wave propagation models. For this reason, different agencies may present slightly different results and preliminary determinations may be corrected later.

IPMA also recommended that, in situations of seismic activity, the indications of civil protection services should always be followed.
