Amazon Air cargo plane overshoots runway and causes death of five people

Jornal Económico7 September 2026 at 10:14

An Amazon Air cargo plane, a Boeing 767-300, crashed during landing at Miami International Airport, overshooting the runway and causing the death of five people and injuring five others, three in critical condition. The flight had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and crashed shortly before 2:00 PM local time. The aircraft also struck several vehicles on the ground, and some of the victims were trapped inside or under those vehicles.

The Miami-Dade County mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, confirmed the casualty toll at a press conference, stating that rescue teams arrived at the scene within seconds. Amazon stated it is working closely with authorities to understand what happened. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered the suspension of all flights at the airport.

The accident occurred during Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest periods of the year at airports. It is still unclear whether the people who died were on board the plane, on the ground, or in both locations.

Authorities said it is too early to determine the cause of the accident, which will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The federal agency plans to hold a press conference on Monday, September 7.
