The AfD is on the brink of an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General7 September 2026 at 09:33

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a historic result in the regional elections of Saxony-Anhalt, in eastern Germany, by obtaining 44% of the votes, according to data from public television ARD with 90% of the votes counted. This result represents a growth of 23 percentage points compared to the previous elections, surpassing all expectations.

The AfD fell just a few seats short of an absolute majority, which would allow it to overcome the firewall that keeps it politically isolated. However, to govern, the party will need the support of another party.

Sahra Wagenknecht's BSW party, a pro-Russian left-wing force, emerges as the only force willing to not block the AfD. The BSW is currently at the 5% threshold, the minimum percentage required to obtain seats in the regional parliament.
