Nepal today raised the death toll to 1,355 and kept the number of missing at 4,996 resulting from the earthquake that hit the country. The tremor of magnitude 7.9 degrees on the Richter scale hit Nepal on Saturday, causing large-scale devastation in the capital Kathmandu and in other regions of the country.
Nepalese authorities continue rescue and search efforts for survivors among the rubble. International rescue teams are also arriving to assist with relief work. Hospitals are overwhelmed with thousands of injured people seeking medical attention.
The government of Nepal declared a state of emergency and requested international assistance to deal with the humanitarian crisis. The international community responded with offers of aid, including rescue teams and emergency supplies.
