London issues thousands of fines to supercars, but 99% remain unpaid

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 09:00

The city of London faces a very expensive challenge, where supercars from abroad park illegally and whose owners ignore almost all of the fines issued. The parking chaos on the streets of the British capital involves luxury vehicles registered abroad that appear not to comply with local rules.

The overwhelming majority of fines issued to these vehicles, around 99%, remain unpaid. This is mainly due to the fact that many of these supercars belong to tourists or temporary residents who leave the country without financial consequences for the infractions committed.

Local authorities face difficulties in tracking and collecting debts from owners who are often outside the United Kingdom. The existing enforcement systems cannot, in practice, compel payment of fines by drivers who are not permanent residents.

This situation represents a significant cost for the municipality of London, which sees public coffers deprived of funds that should be collected. The problem raises questions about the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms and about the need for more effective solutions to deal with foreign vehicles that commit infractions on British roads.
