Meet the century-old house that Rio de Janeiro architect Maurício Nóbrega transformed into a family retreat

oglobo7 September 2026 at 08:30

Since 2019, Rio de Janeiro architect Maurício Nóbrega had been wondering if the purchase and renovation of a century-old house in Portugal had been the result of an adventurous impulse. The decision came on the return from a trip to Morocco, when he and his wife, psychologist Cecília Nóbrega, stopped in Lisbon and ended up visiting one of the villages in the town of Azeitão, 40 minutes from the Portuguese capital, located next to the Serra da Arrábida.

A couple of friends who lived in the area proposed the visit and the couple fell in love with the place. During an afternoon sitting in the local square, with cheeses and wines from the region, the idea arose to look for a vacation home in the locality. The couple's search followed a journey compared by the article to experiences like those portrayed in the books "A Year in Provence" and "Under the Tuscan Sun".

The property found was a ruin that had gone through various transformations over time: it was part of a farm, then it was divided to house a school and, later, it operated as a barbershop. The complete process, including the purchase and renovation work, lasted about a year.

Maurício Nóbrega was responsible for the transformation project of the old ruin into a family retreat, creating a space that combines the charm of the century-old construction with the modern needs of the family.

Hidden Water Leaks: 7 Signs to Watch Out For

This informative article addresses the identification of hidden water leaks in homes, presenting seven signs that homeowners should watch out for: unexplained increase in water consumption on the bill, consumption recorded on the meter with everything closed, moisture stains and mold on walls, changes in floors and baseboards, persistent water circulation noises, and pressure changes. The article warns that the origin of the leak does not always correspond to where the water becomes visible, and recommends avoiding destructive interventions before an adequate diagnosis. Technical methods such as thermography, acoustic methods with geophones, tracer gas, and CCTV video inspection are described, which allow locating the leak without unnecessary construction work. Technical evaluation is recommended when signs persist and household checks cannot clarify the origin of the problem.

Luxury homes: Square meter fixed at 14,600 euros in Lisbon in June

Luxury home prices in Lisbon exceeded those in Madrid in June, with the square meter settling at 14,600 euros, an increase of 3.3%, according to the Savills World Cities Prime Residential Index study. Although Lisbon remains distant from cities like Paris (19,000 euros) or Geneva (26,300 euros), premium rents in the Portuguese capital rose 7.6% in July, to 30 euros per square meter, second only to Cape Town. Savills projects growth between 2% and 3.9% for Lisbon in the second half of 2026, noting that demand exceeds supply, which has driven rents to rise more than double purchase prices.
