September 11 Survivor Returns to Work at World Trade Center 14 Years After Escaping the Attacks
Greg Carafello, now 66 years old, was on the 18th floor of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. Carafello and a colleague decided to leave the building minutes later, not knowing that a second plane would still hit the South Tower. — No one knew a second plane was going to hit — he told the Daily Mail.
The two descended via the stairs and crossed the complex amid falling debris. Carafello managed to exit the site minutes before United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower. After hours of walking through Manhattan, he was able to return to New Jersey, where he reunited with his wife and four children.
The attack killed 2,977 people, according to official records, while thousands of others later developed cancer and illnesses related to exposure to the debris. Now, 14 years after escaping the attacks, Carafello has returned to work at the World Trade Center.
