If PS Enables Budget, It Gives Government Space to "Escalate the Attack"

Diário de Viseu7 September 2026 at 08:30

Paulo Raimundo issued a warning to the PS parties during the rally at the Festa do Avante!, organized by the PCP. The communist leader warned that if PS enables the State budget, this will give the Government space to worsen what he called an "attack" on the interests of workers and the population.

Paulo Raimundo's message comes in the context of budget negotiations in Portugal, where PS, although not directly governing, has been exerting influence over the parliamentary stability of the executive. The PCP has been one of the parties critical of the Government's policies.

The rally at the Festa do Avante! is traditionally the main moment of mobilization and political affirmation for the Portuguese Communist Party, held annually and gathering thousands of supporters. At this event, party leaders present their political positions and make assessments of the national situation.

This warning from Paulo Raimundo reflects the tension between the PCP and PS in the Portuguese political landscape, with the communists defending that PS should not facilitate the approval of measures they consider harmful to workers, warning about the consequences of a State Budget that, in their view, does not meet the needs of the population.
