Portuguese Biovance Capital invests four million in Seville-based Vaxdyn

Eco7 September 2026 at 08:00

Portuguese Biovance Capital led an 11 million euro Series A round in Seville biotech Vaxdyn, investing four million euros in this funding. This round also featured participation from the European Innovation Council (EIC) fund and the Impacto Andalucía Innovación y Desarrollo fund managed by Arcano Partners. Biovance Capital had already invested 300 thousand euros in the company in 2021.

Vaxdyn is developing vaccines against highly pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including the species Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. This investment will allow the company to advance to clinical evaluation of the K-VAX vaccine through a Phase 1 clinical trial aimed at preventing infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii.

Ricardo Perdigão Henriques, managing partner at Biovance Capital, stated that he was very pleased to support Vaxdyn in the development of K-VAX toward the clinic, considering this a potential new vaccine that could save lives worldwide. André Albergaria, principal at Biovance Capital, highlighted that antimicrobial resistance is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time, and that K-VAX has the potential to protect against potentially fatal bacteria associated with severe antibiotic-resistant pneumonia, urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections.

The 11 million euro round will also be complemented by grants from the EIC Accelerator and CARB-X, an international organization with 800 million dollars dedicated to supporting the development of technologically advanced antibacterials. This is the third investment from the Biovance Capital Fund I and the second investment the fund has made in Southern Europe, reflecting its commitment to the region given the high potential of its biotechnology sector.

Why do a donut or coffee seem to have risen more than the CPI?

The article explains why everyday products such as donuts and coffees appear to have increased in price more than the Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicates, analysing that the discrepancy is due to the nature of the index itself, which calculates a weighted average of a broad basket of goods and services, not necessarily reflecting each consumer's individual experience. Since 2020, food has risen 38.5% and dining out 28.4%, while communications have fallen 2.3%, and purchase frequency, geographic differences, income differences and the way housing is treated in the CPI (purchases excluded, rents included) contribute to this differentiated perception of inflation. The CPI serves to measure the overall evolution of prices, but does not capture the specific impact on each family's life.

End of fuel support puts public transport service at risk, says ANTROP

The National Association of Passenger Transport (ANTROP) warned that the end of extraordinary fuel support puts the continuity of road public transport at risk, estimating an impact of 15 million euros in the sector between July and September. The association argues that the monthly subsidy of 420 euros per eligible heavy vehicle, granted by the Government for three months, should be extended while exceptional conditions persist in the fuel market. According to ANTROP, the increase of about 0.289 euros per liter in diesel compared to the pre-crisis level translates into significant financial burden. The association recalls that the 74 member companies are bound by public service contracts that prevent immediate reflection of increases in fares, warning that the lack of compensation may compromise the economic viability of companies and compliance with contracted services.
