Former Maceió mayor João Henrique Caldas, known as JHC, abandoned his Senate bid and put his wife, Marina Cândia (now Marina JHC), as his replacement candidate. This move maintained the alliance with deputy Arthur Lira (PP) in the race for the government of Alagoas.
The decision, however, generated a new problem: Marina began competing with Lira himself for one of the two Senate seats. Launched at the limit of the legal deadline, she appears technically tied with Lira and with Renan Calheiros (MDB), according to a Quaest poll released on the 24th.
According to the survey, Marina JHC registers 15% of voting intentions, while Lira appears with 20% and Renan Calheiros with 18%. The margin of error is three percentage points up or down, which places the three candidates in a technical tie situation.
Senate candidate for Republicanos, Davi Davino Filho commented on the race scenario and stated that the main obstacle for Marina is winning votes in the state's interior, where the presence and recognition of candidates tends to be more challenging than in the capital Maceió.
