The most ambitious conservation policies will not be able to halt the decline of birds and butterflies in Europe. This is the conclusion of a study published in the journal 'Nature Ecology & Evolution', which analyzed the effectiveness of environmental protection measures to reverse the loss of biodiversity on the European continent.

According to the article, although it is essential to expand protected areas, restore ecosystems and promote sustainable agricultural and forestry practices, the decline of many species of birds and butterflies will not be easily reversed. These two groups of animals are considered key indicators of the state of ecosystems.

The study was led by two French research centers: INRAE and CESAB. Spanish institutions also participated in the research, namely CREAF, CSIC, the Catalan Ornithological Institute (ICO) and the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Granollers.

Poor air quality revealed in Northern schools

A study by the "Respirar Fundo" project, co-funded by the European Union, analyzed air quality in 13 schools across the country, including three in Northern Portugal (EB de Manhente in Barcelos, EB de Freixo in Ponte de Lima, and EB 2/3 Pevidém and EB Gil Vicente in Guimarães), revealing that atmospheric pollutants measured at the entrance to these schools exceed future legal limits. The monitoring, conducted by the Environmental and Sustainability Research Centre, found that in nine of the 12 schools analyzed, concentrations of PM2.5 and NO₂ would exceed the stricter limit values of European Directive 2024/2881, which comes into force in 2030. The problem is worsened by road traffic, with peaks during rush hours. The project will now expand with "Respirar+Fundo", covering more schools and regions.
