The empire was not a fable

Madeira Opina7 September 2026 at 02:17

Portugal presents its overseas history as a seductive epic, but an incomplete one. The article argues that the Portuguese presence in the world demonstrates capacity for navigation and trade, but does not constitute historical superiority. It is argued that discovering is not developing, and that an empire should be evaluated by the institutions and freedoms it left behind, not by the size of its territory. Portuguese expansion did not require building democracy, industry, or well-being, as it was possible to dominate distant territories while maintaining internal inequalities.

This narrative erases the fact that colonized territories already had their own societies, and that expansion involved coercion and violence. The argument that "without Portugal they would have nothing" is presented as a fallacy that ignores the internal development of those regions. The presence of heritage or the Portuguese language does not serve as proof of historical justice.

In the 20th century, the Estado Novo transformed this illusion into a national dogma to sustain the dictatorship and a thirteen-year war. Only the 25th of April made decolonization inevitable.

Adult history does not need to erase navigators or heritage, but demands rigor to recognize Portuguese ingenuity without transforming domination into virtue. Whoever needs to transform conquest into poetry to bear the past has not yet learned to read it.
