Hundreds of devotees are expected at the traditional pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora da Cola in Ourique, which takes place on September 7 and 8, coinciding with the municipal holiday. Promoted by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia with support from the City Hall, the initiative includes religious ceremonies, processions, dances and performances by choral groups, in a mix of the sacred and the profane. The sanctuary, whose current church is a Baroque construction from the beginning of the 17th century, dates back to before the 16th century and remains as one of the main pilgrimage sites in the Baixo Alentejo, where traditionally pilgrims fulfill promises, some arriving at dawn or walking on their knees to the temple.
