"Speak Portuguese!": Reports of prejudice against immigrants become research in Portugal

Público6 September 2026 at 16:46

A study by the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Iscte) is collecting reports of prejudice against immigrants through an online questionnaire. The objective is to hear from a thousand immigrants from CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries) countries to create a map of discrimination and xenophobia in Portugal.

The research emerged from frequent reports of prejudice situations experienced by Lusophone immigrants in Portugal, including experiences of linguistically motivated discrimination, such as the expression "Speak Portuguese!" used in a derogatory manner.

The study involves researchers from Iscte and aims to collect data that allows identifying patterns of discrimination faced by immigrants from countries such as Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste, and other CPLP members.

The research results may be used to support public policies and actions to combat xenophobia in Portugal, contributing to a better understanding of the discriminatory phenomenon in the country.
