Under threat from Trump, Greenland receives "substantial measures" from the EU

Jornal de Negócios6 September 2026 at 23:21

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, traveled this Sunday to Greenland to present a "substantial package of measures" to the region, in a gesture aimed at reaffirming the European Union's commitment to the Danish autonomous territory. The visit takes place in the context of threats from the administration of Donald Trump, which has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, a territory that belongs to Denmark.

During the visit, Von der Leyen met with local authorities and reiterated European support for the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark. The package of measures announced by the president of the European Commission aims to strengthen the relationship between the EU and the Arctic territory, covering areas such as economic cooperation, climate issues and institutional support.

Greenland, which is an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, has gained greater international attention due to its strategic position in the Arctic and its natural resources. Trump's previous statements about the possibility of acquiring the territory generated concern both in Lisbon and in European capitals, leading to a reinforcement of diplomatic positions by the EU and its member states.
