Conflict in Ukraine: US envoys arrive in Kyiv

oRegiões6 September 2026 at 15:00

The United States special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arrived this Sunday in Kiev to present President Volodymyr Zelensky with a plan aimed at stopping the conflict in Ukraine. This trip constitutes the first official visit of both to the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the diplomatic initiatives promoted by Donald Trump's administration, having occurred immediately after preliminary contacts maintained in Moscow with Russian leadership. The Washington delegation landed on Ukrainian soil during the morning, with the Kiev executive confirming closed-door working meetings.

The diplomatic initiative is based on a package of security and territorial commitments, designed to unblock the political impasse. According to diplomatic sources, the proposal provides for Western security guarantees for Kiev, counterposed to demands for military neutrality and possible administrative concessions on the fronts where Russian troops have consolidated positions. Zelensky reiterated that any lasting solution requires the preservation of national sovereignty, refusing precarious agreements, and insisted on obtaining binding legal guarantees and support for the reconstruction of the destroyed energy infrastructure.

Before the stop in Kiev, the American delegation passed through the Russian Federation to sound out Vladimir Putin's demands. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the work continues and so do the contacts, but that a necessary basis for a definitive understanding has not yet been structured. However, he added that the path of dialogue is not closed if Russian strategic concerns are considered.

International diplomacy is following this journey with extreme caution. Although the presence of top negotiators in Kiev signals a tangible commitment from Washington to force an understanding, the structural divergences between Ukrainians and Russians remain profound. Several European heads of government stress that the continent's security architecture cannot be decided on the sidelines of the Community allies. The outcome of this visit will determine whether the delegations will sit back at the table in the coming days or whether the conflict will continue to be held hostage by the war of attrition on the ground.
