A fire during a wedding on Friday (4) left at least 22 people dead and several injured in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The party was held on the first floor of a commercial building in Lingwala, at the Panacea nightclub, when the fire started. The fire lasted until the early hours of Saturday (5).
According to local authorities, one of the difficulties for evacuating the premises was that the hall had only one exit door, which slowed down the process. The bride, groom, and guests were celebrating when the fire occurred.
The number of victims is still preliminary and was presented by the mayor of the Lingwala district, Norbert Mushiga Nzindula, on Saturday morning, hours after the incident. According to him, there are numerous injured people admitted to the emergency room.
