At least 22 dead in bus accident on Cape Verdean island of Fogo

At least 22 people died and 18 were injured in a road accident that occurred on Saturday, September 5, on the island of Fogo, in Cape Verde. The initial toll indicated 18 dead, but the number rose in the last hours. Among the injured are children aged between six and 11 years old, four of whom in serious condition.

The accident happened when the bus, which was transporting students on a school trip, left the road and fell from a height of about 30 meters in the locality of Campanas de Cima, in the municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo.

The Municipal Council of São Filipe maintains a team on site, in coordination with the Health Delegation, the National Police, the Voluntary Municipal Firefighters and other authorities, to provide assistance to the victims and their relatives. The municipality declared two days of municipal mourning and announced an extraordinary meeting for today, intended to deliberate on support for the families of the victims.

The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, and the prime minister, Francisco Carvalho, publicly expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, also recognizing the work of health professionals and rescue teams who are assisting the victims.
