Scientists are developing a gene editing treatment with the aim of permanently eliminating high cholesterol. The approach arose from the study of a rare genetic mutation in the ANGPTL3 gene, also known as the angiopoietin-like 3 protein gene.
This gene plays a fundamental role in regulating LDL levels (the so-called "bad cholesterol") and triglycerides in the body. The identified mutation suggests that inactivating or modifying this gene could significantly reduce these lipid parameters in a lasting way. Researchers hope that through gene editing, it will be possible to replicate the protective effects of this natural mutation, offering a permanent solution for people with high cholesterol, instead of chronic treatments that require daily medication.
