At least 22 people died after a bus carrying students fell into a ravine about 30 meters deep on Saturday night on the island of Fogo, in Cape Verde. The accident occurred around 9 PM when the vehicle left a road at the edge of a cliff.
According to the Municipal Chamber of São Filipe, the bus was taking students on a field trip between Cha das Caldeiras and Campanas de Cima. Most of the passengers were high school students from the localities of Curral Grande and Ponta Verde. The initial death toll, reported as 18, was updated to 22 by authorities.
Emergency teams are working at the scene and face difficulties accessing the bottom of the ravine due to the rocky terrain. Another 19 passengers were taken to the Regional Hospital of São Francisco de Assis, four of them in serious condition.
