Vatican: Pope appeals for peace in Ukraine and supports new diplomatic negotiation attempt

Pope Leo XIV lamented today the recent military attacks by Russia against Ukraine, expressing his sadness at the news of violent attacks that hit several cities and civilian infrastructure, causing deaths of innocent people. The pontiff spoke to the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, after the recitation of the Angelus.

Leo XIV expressed his closeness in the face of the suffering of the Ukrainian population, which has lived for years in anguish and fear, publicly calling for an end to violence, for destruction to stop, and for hearts to open to dialogue and peace. The Pope also stated that he hopes the efforts to resume negotiations bring concrete results and open space for diplomacy.

The pontiff's words come after the arrival in Moscow of American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Saturday, as part of a mediation mission confirmed by United States President Donald Trump. Russia has intensified its attacks against Ukraine in recent months, which it invaded in February 2022.

The papal intervention ended with an appeal to Catholic communities to raise their prayer to the Lord, so that concord may prevail in all conflicts of the world.
