Indonesian authorities suspended operations at six airports on Sunday following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatoa, announced Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi at a press conference. The measure affected Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, three other airports in the capital, as well as the international terminals in Bandung and Radin, near Bandar Lampung on the island of Sumatra. The volcano is located more than 150 kilometers from the capital.
Jakarta's international airport extended the flight suspension until 17:30 local time, a decision that affected more than 200 flights and approximately 20,000 passengers. The situation caused major disruptions to air travel in the region.
Mount Anak Krakatoa erupted on Saturday, spewing lava and producing blasts heard up to 700 kilometers away, according to Indonesia's volcanology agency. On Sunday, new eruptions were recorded, leading to the maintenance of restrictions on airports in the region.
