New telescope instrument in Chile with Portuguese "hand" makes first observation

The latest instrument installed on the VLT telescope in Chile, the 'MOONS' spectrograph, made its first observation, according to an announcement by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), which has scientists involved in the equipment. In a statement, FCUL reports that the instrument has the ability to observe about a thousand astronomical objects simultaneously. The project involved Portuguese participation through the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences, with researchers from FCUL and the University of Porto. This spectrograph represents a new tool for the international scientific community, allowing data to be collected on multiple celestial bodies at once.
