Almost 7 tonnes of biowaste were collected during the 11 days of Expofacic in Cantanhede. In total, 6,920 kg of organic waste produced by associations, Parish Councils and restaurants participating in the event were collected and sent for recovery.
The awareness and training actions carried out by INOVA-EM with operators of food stalls and other gastronomic spaces had an effect, allowing the separation of organic waste and preventing it from being treated together with undifferentiated waste.
Pedro Cardoso, president of the Board of Directors of INOVA-EM, considered that the results achieved demonstrate the effectiveness of these initiatives and the importance of strengthening selective collection of biowaste at large-scale events, contributing to the reduction of undifferentiated waste and to a more circular economy.
The official recalled that, on average, about 40% of the household bin is biowaste, emphasizing that the main objective of the awareness campaigns in Cantanhede is for each family to create a routine of correct separation of biowaste in their daily lives.
