Impact of the new housing credit rules: effort rate for young people increases

SAPO Notícias6 September 2026 at 10:17

Banco de Portugal reduced the maximum recommended effort rate for housing credit to 45%. This decision was interpreted by the market as a measure to brake access to credit. The dominant reading after the announcement of this new rule was that fewer people would be able to obtain financing, especially young people. The new regulation aims to limit the weight of credit installments in households' available income.

Not everything that looks like news is, and 59 young people are learning to be skeptical

Fifty-nine young people between 15 and 17 years old participated in a Summer School by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation in Sintra, dedicated to the theme "(Dis)information and Democracy", where they learned to recognize and combat disinformation. The participants went out into the street to carry out reports and interview people, discovering in practice the challenges of journalism and the importance of listening to real stories. The experience showed them that, beyond verifying sources, it is fundamental to be skeptical of the natural tendency to believe what confirms our preconceived ideas. Young people like Leonor Rio and Pedro Figueiredo reported having started to look differently at social media, recognizing that disinformation can be accidental and is frequently related to algorithms, emphasizing the need to "take a step back" and analyze information with an outside perspective.
