Brazil had an identity fraud attempt every 5.5 seconds in the first half of the year, study shows

extra6 September 2026 at 09:00

Brazil registered 2.8 million identity fraud attempts in the first half of this year, according to the Serasa Experian Fraud Map. This equals one attempt every 5.5 seconds and represents a 32.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The study considered attempts identified during registration and identity validation processes, meaning cases where someone tries to impersonate another person or uses information, documents, or other identity elements fraudulently to open an account, request credit, or access some service.

Leandro Bartolassi, director of Authentication and Fraud Prevention at Serasa Experian, explains that this growth happens in a context that combines expansion of digital journeys and evolution of the techniques used by fraudsters.

According to the executive, today more stages of life happen digitally, from opening an account to contracting services, and at the same time, fraudsters are more organized and have technology at their disposal to carry out scams.
