The history of Brazilian aviation is deeply connected to Governador Island, in Rio de Janeiro. This connection is old and dates back to the 1920s, when Ponta do Galeão was chosen to house Brazilian naval aviation, long before the location became the famous international airport.
It was in the second half of 1936, exactly 90 years ago, that the foundations were laid for the first national experience of aircraft manufacturing on an industrial scale in Brazil. Before the creation of Embraer, which today is a global reference in the sector, the Galeão Aircraft Factory was founded in Rio.
This endeavor was fundamental for Brazil to begin mastering the art of designing, assembling, and overhauling aircraft in the national territory, at a time when the country was still taking its first steps in this industry segment.
The factory represented a milestone in the history of the Brazilian aerospace industry, establishing the foundations that would later allow the country to become a relevant player in aircraft manufacturing on the global stage.
