Brazil's health regulatory agency (Anvisa) authorized this Friday the exceptional import of the experimental drug ALN-6457 for influencer Lito Sousa, diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare disease, with rapid progression and no known cure.
The drug is developed by American pharmaceutical company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and has not yet been formally tested in humans for the treatment of prion diseases. Because it has no commercial registration or legal representative in Brazil, the product had to be released through an exceptional pathway.
The import request was submitted by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, responsible for following Lito Sousa. The influencer was accepted into a compassionate use program, a mechanism that allows patients without therapeutic alternatives access to still experimental treatments.
Lito Sousa celebrated the approval on social media, stating that the treatment should arrive in Brazil within 7 to 9 days.
