On Friday, October 4, documents were filed in the dispute between the American newspaper The New York Times and OpenAI and Microsoft, revealing the parties' arguments in the copyright infringement case. The trial was set to take place at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, with references to poetry and visual arts made during the arguments.
OpenAI went so far as to state that copyright cannot stand in the way of progress, positioning itself against the newspaper's claims. It was the last day for filing summary judgment petitions, which could prevent a full trial from taking place.
Judge Sidney H. Stein is expected to issue a ruling in the coming weeks on whether the case will proceed to trial or be resolved through these advance petitions.
Also on Friday, the newspapers The Seattle Times and Newsday filed lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft for the same reasons as NYT: the use of content from their publications to train artificial intelligence systems.
