Feijóo and Vivas will step up their clash with the Government after disagreements with Sánchez over the warnings

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General6 September 2026 at 07:22

The narrative battle over the Ceuta migration crisis is far from having written its last chapter, already completing a month since the migration avalanche that the autonomous city suffered in the last days of July. The ministerial appearance of the Government president, Pedro Sánchez, in the plenary session of Congress last Thursday left several aspects that will mark the new parliamentary term.

Among these aspects is the definitive break between Sánchez and the president of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, who was once someone very highly regarded by the head of the Executive despite being from different political formations. This break represents a turning point in the relations between both.

Feijóo and Vivas are preparing to step up their confrontation with the Government after the discrepancies with Sánchez regarding the warnings about the crisis. The new parliamentary term will be fully activated next week with the first ordinary plenary session and the first question time to the Government after the holidays.

CMF: to the Order of Social Workers!

A Madeiran blogger criticizes a competitive selection process for the recruitment of Social Workers at the Municipality of Funchal, arguing that the requirements established by the jury favor candidates with a master's degree in Social Work, but without the respective bachelor's degree, to the detriment of candidates with a basic background in Social Work. The author alerts that the procedure does not require proof of registration with the Order of Social Workers, despite the knowledge test including the statutes of the Order, and questions the jury's competence. He also appeals to the Order of Social Workers to defend its members who were harmed and suggests that the text be sent to the Court of Auditors and the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Have a trip booked? New phase comes into force at European borders and Government admits "added pressure" at airports

Portugal entered a new phase of border controls from September 6, with biometric data collection at 100% for travellers covered by the European Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaces the traditional passport stamp with a digital registration containing biometric data, facial image and fingerprints. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro admitted that this change represents "added pressure" on border services, with expected impact at Lisbon, Faro and Porto airports, the most affected by international traffic. The EES applies to third-country nationals entering the Schengen area for short stays, not covering EU citizens or holders of long-term authorizations.
