Rain and thunderstorms heading to Portugal: bad weather arrives on this day and this region will be the most 'hit'

Postal do Algarve6 September 2026 at 06:00

Rain and thunderstorms will affect some regions of Portugal on Monday, September 7th, but the scenario on the mainland will be quite different, with lots of sun, high temperatures and conditions that keep the fire risk at concerning levels. The anticyclone remains influential over mainland Portugal, allowing the maintenance of a warm air mass and mostly dry weather, while the instability will be essentially concentrated in the Azores.

It is in the Azores that rain will be most likely to appear, with periods of very cloudy skies alternating with clear spells, possibility of showers and thunderstorms. The instability should be more evident during the morning and affect especially the islands of the Western and Central groups. The minimum temperatures in the Azores will be between 22 and 24°C and the maximums between 27 and 30°C.

In mainland Portugal, the forecast points to generally little cloudy or clear skies, with no indication of significant rain. The combination of heat and absence of precipitation leads Luso Meteo to warn about the maintenance of a high fire risk in many regions, especially in the interior, where the heat will be more intense.

Temperatures on the mainland should not change significantly, with maximums between 23 and 27°C on the coast and between 33 and 40°C in the interior, with the Alentejo possibly approaching 40°C in some places. The wind should blow from north or northwest, possibly intensifying during the afternoon on the coast and reaching gusts up to 55 km/h in coastal areas and high ground.
