The Anak Krakatau volcano erupted in Indonesia at 3:53 AM on Sunday (6), or 5:53 PM on Saturday in Brasília time, lasting approximately 30 seconds, according to information from the Indonesian Geological Agency. There is no information on casualties or injuries at this time.
The eruption was sufficient to suspend operations at Soekarno Hatta International Airport, the main airport of the capital Jakarta, until 9:30 AM due to volcanic ash that made visibility impossible in the area. At least 209 flights and approximately 22,000 passengers were affected.
The flight suspension, initially planned to last only until 5:30 AM, needed to be extended, as sources from the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation revealed to the Reuters news agency. Passengers were stranded at the airport terminals during the suspension period.
In addition to flight cancellations, schools were closed and fishing activities were halted in the area affected by volcanic ash. Anak Krakatau is one of the most active volcanoes in the Indonesian archipelago, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra.
