The concept "farming aura" became viral on the social media platforms TikTok and Instagram, representing a new way for Gen Z to deal with embarrassing moments. Instead of feeling deep shame after an embarrassing situation, like tripping on the sidewalk, the person simply "lost five hundred aura points," as if it were a game.
The expression is a fusion of the term "farming" from video games, which refers to performing repetitive actions to accumulate resources, with the idea of personal magnetism and individual energy. The concept allows one to relativize daily errors and failures, treating them as point losses in a fictional scoring system.
A decade ago, tripping in public would have caused a deep existential crisis, with anxious rumination and wishes to disappear. Gen Z, however, developed what is described as a "shame hack," with clinical precision, transforming embarrassing situations into something trivial and temporary.
The phenomenon reflects a cultural shift in the way young people view ridicule, opting for a lighter approach and disconnecting from the negative emotional consequences that previous generations experienced in similar situations.
