MORE THAN 8 THOUSAND DRUNK DRIVERS ARRESTED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR BY THE GNR

O Atual - Informação de Verdade6 September 2026 at 00:03

The Republican National Guard intercepts and removes from circulation, every week, about 280 drivers with blood alcohol levels considered criminal. This action is part of the GNR's enforcement operations on Portuguese roads.

Between January 1 and July 31 of this year, the GNR recorded 8,438 arrests of drunk drivers. This number reflects only the arrests made during this period.

In addition to arrests, 8,856 crimes related to driving under the influence of alcohol were also recorded. The difference between the number of arrests and the number of crimes is due to the fact that the same driver may be counted in multiple crimes, or to other legal procedures applied.

The data covers the first seven months of the year and demonstrates the continuity of the GNR's efforts to combat driving under the influence of alcohol on Portugal's roads.
