The Azores celebrated on July 20th the 50th anniversary of the region's Constitutional Autonomy, a historic date that marks five decades since the Azoreans won the right to their political and administrative autonomy through the Portuguese Constitution.

The ceremony took place at the supreme body of the region, the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, and was attended by the highest institutional figures of the country and the region. Present were the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, as well as the President of the Legislative Assembly and the President of the Regional Government of the Azores.

The event also brought together regional and national deputies, members of the Regional Government of the Azores, and paid tribute to former Presidents of the Legislative Assembly and former Presidents of the Regional Government, recognizing the role of all those who contributed to the development of Azorean autonomy over these five decades.

This celebration symbolizes the importance of the autonomy statute that allows the Azores to govern themselves autonomously in matters of regional interest, while simultaneously maintaining their connection to the Portuguese State, a model that has become a reference in the framework of local government in Portugal.
