Actor João Victor Gonçalves, who plays the character Mau Mau in the soap opera "Quem ama cuida", suffered a homophobic attack while heading to the Rock in Rio festival. The incident occurred hours before the support he received from cast members.
After the attack, several cast members expressed solidarity with the actor on social media. Among those who showed support were Isabela Garcia, Rodrigo Fagundes and the soap opera's own author, Walcyr Carrasco.
Rodrigo Fagundes, who plays Nicolau in the storyline, recorded a video repudiating the attacks. He said he also suffered prejudice during his school years and said that only those who have gone through it know how homophobia happens.
Fagundes, who is a gay man and has been married for 23 years to screenwriter Wendell Bendelack, recalled that in his teenage years, in the 80s and 90s, he was a survivor of this type of violence. He added that he cannot imagine what it is like nowadays.
