The Azores will implement an innovative submarine cable protection system, composed of 200 acoustic sensors distributed across the region's sea. These sensors will be responsible for collecting and transmitting information about the underwater environment.
The information collected by the sensors will be sent to an underwater acoustics center that is being created on the island of Faial. This center will function as the operational base and data processing hub for the system.
Underwater noise constitutes a valuable source of information that allows for monitoring and protecting the submarine cable network existing in the Azores region, an area of great strategic importance for international communications.
