"More than words: facts and results": Deputy Francisco Figueira highlights new Variant in Évora

Rádio Campanário5 September 2026 at 18:00

PSD deputy Francisco Figueira, elected for the district of Évora, considered that the Alentejo experienced a historic moment with the Inauguration of the Eastern Variant of Évora of the Itinerário Principal 2 (IP2). In a statement, the parliamentarian emphasized that this is another commitment fulfilled by the Government in the region, representing a decisive infrastructure for the modernization of the road network of Central Alentejo, with an extension of 12.8 kilometers and a total investment of 54.9 million euros. The new section allows diverting a large part of regional traffic from the center of Évora, with immediate benefits in the urban quality of life of the city.

Francisco Figueira criticized the former "Governo da Geringonça" and the parties PS and PCP, accusing them of not explaining to the populations of Alentejo why they did not complete the IP2 route during their eight years in government, nor why Beja and Portalegre remain without motorway connection. The deputy referred to the "socialist bankruptcy" that led to the widespread suspension of public works in 2011, considering it yet another heavy legacy of PS governments that, in coalition with PCP, struck the road network of Alentejo head-on.

PS, through the District Federation of Évora, congratulated itself on the inauguration of the variant, considering it a structural work financed by the Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência, but argued that this crucial infrastructure was assumed by a socialist government and "abandoned and totally paralyzed" in 2011 by a PSD executive. The party considered that this moment represents a historic victory for the region and the fulfillment of a commitment made by PS to the people of Alentejo.

PCP, through the Regional Organization Directorate of Évora, also claimed the completion of the remaining section of the IP2, between the new Eastern Variant and the Ramal de S. Manços, whose works were suspended in 2011 by the then PSD/CDS-PP Government. The communists stated that this section "cannot continue to be abandoned" and promised to continue the fight so that it is completed, considering that the Government cannot fail to address this need.
