Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered on Saturday the suspension of attacks against Russia, on the occasion of the visit of United States envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to the Russian and Ukrainian capitals. Zelensky announced on social media that Ukraine is willing to respect a ceasefire on aerial attacks against cities involved in the negotiation process, also guaranteeing the normal operation of Russian airspace so that negotiators can land safely.
Shortly before, Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered the same measure: the suspension for three days of attacks against the Ukrainian capital. Zelensky explained that the truce extends until the end of Saturday and during Sunday and Monday, expecting Russia to do the same out of respect for Kiev.
However, Zelensky denounced that, before Putin announced the ceasefire, there had been bombings against the airports in Kiev and Borispol, which he considered to be a Russian reaction to the preparations for the visit of the American delegation. Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian aviation in February 2022, but if Russian attacks cease, the plane with Trump's envoys could land at one of the Ukrainian airports.
Trump confirmed on Friday that his envoys would travel to Moscow and Kiev to seek to revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The trip occurs one year after Trump received Putin in Alaska in August 2025, in an attempt to end the war that began in February 2022, one of the North American president's campaign promises. Zelensky said that Ukraine is prepared to hold a substantive conversation with Trump's envoys, but promised firmness in the negotiations.
