'Port Wine Day' celebrates with public tasting of 'vintages'

A Voz de Trás-os-Montes5 September 2026 at 16:26

The celebrations of the 270th anniversary of the Demarcated Region of Douro, the oldest demarcated and regulated wine region in the world, include several initiatives as part of Port Wine Day, celebrated on 10 September. The programme includes the awarding of the "Douro + Sustentável" distinctions, which recognise projects, people and companies that stand out in the protection, promotion and sustainable development of the wine region.

The 2024 harvest was declared Vintage by several producers, generating references of particular quality. On 11 September, between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM, some of these declarations will be available for tasting at the facilities of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto, on Rua de Ferreira Borges, in Porto, in an initiative open to the public.

On 12 September, the IVDP organises a sunset party at Mercado do Bolhão, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, in the Gallery on the 3rd floor. Around thirty producers are joining the initiative, offering tastings of various Port wine styles. The goal is to reach a diverse audience, with particular focus on younger age groups, presenting Port wine as a versatile drink, also suitable for relaxed social moments.

For Gilberto Igrejas, president of the IVDP, these initiatives represent an opportunity to bring Port wine closer to different audiences, in less traditional settings, showing the versatility of a wine unique in the world, deeply connected to its History and with styles capable of accompanying different moments of consumption.
