Large, robust and protective: the Serra da Estrela dog is much more than a shepherd

The Serra da Estrela dog is a giant with a good heart that is celebrated on September 8th. This is a guard dog that, despite its robust and protective appearance, loves to play with children. The breed is known for being large and strong, but also for showing an affectionate temperament.

The commemoration of this breed's day was created in 2024, by initiative of the Portuguese Association of the Serra da Estrela Dog. This association made the decision to establish an official date to honor and promote the characteristics of this Portuguese breed.
