Spanish government takes control of Ceuta port to house migrants

Público5 September 2026 at 15:28

The Spanish government has taken control of the Ceuta port through a decree that allows the use of public port space to accommodate migrants. The measure was formalized through a decree signed by the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente.

The decision contemplates the installation of tents on a surface area of 16,000 square meters of public port land. This space will be used to provide temporary shelter to migrants arriving in the Spanish city on African territory.

Ceuta, together with Melilla, are the two Spanish cities located on the African continent, frequently being entry points for migrants trying to reach Europe. The use of the port for shelter purposes represents an extraordinary measure to address the migratory flow in the region.
