The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, announced that he will run for the position of prime minister in the early legislative elections scheduled for October. Vucic, described as a nationalist and populist, resigned from the position of head of government, paving the way for this change in political position.
The decision comes after a series of protests against the government that prompted the resignation. Vucic chose to transfer his political leadership from the position of President of Serbia to that of Prime Minister, through the early electoral process.
This political maneuver allows Vucic to maintain control of the executive power while transferring the institutional figure of the president to another member of his party, the SNS (Serbian Progressive Party). The outgoing president is expected to be nominated by the party to replace Vucic in the leadership of the country.
