Football Games Case. Former Gaia City Council president acquitted

RTP Notícias5 September 2026 at 15:00

The former president of the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, was acquitted in the so-called "Football Games Case." The court decided that the defendant should not be convicted of the crimes he was accused of.

The prosecution argued that Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues had used municipal funds to attend FC Porto games in the Champions League. The Public Prosecutor's Office alleged that these expenses had no institutional justification or public interest.

During the trial, the former official defended himself against the charges, denying any irregularity in the use of public funds. The defense argued that attendance at sporting events could have official purposes related to the promotion of the municipality.

With the acquittal, the court considered there was not enough evidence to demonstrate that the defendant acted with intent or that he diverted public money for personal purposes. The case became known as the "Football Games Case" due to the nature of the accusations.
