Vegetation fire extinguished in Porto da Cruz

A vegetation fire broke out this afternoon in an area of vacant land, at Achada, in Porto da Cruz. The alert was given at 12:48.

The Machico Municipal Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and deployed a heavy firefighting vehicle with four personnel.

The fire was quickly extinguished by the firefighters, who then returned to the station.

The environmental association Quercus denounced the felling of around 1400 cork oaks for the expansion of the Tortosendo Industrial Park, in the municipality of Covilhã. The intervention is foreseen in the Municipal Master Plan, but has generated strong opposition from environmentalists. The Covilhã city council defended the measure arguing that it is necessary to provide industrial land to attract new businesses and large-scale investment to the region.
