Serbia: War criminal Mladic honored in Belgrade without state honors

Euronews Portugal5 September 2026 at 12:51

The former Serbian General Ratko Mladić, convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, was buried yesterday in Belgrade without state honors. The funeral was scheduled for Monday in the Serbian capital.

Thousands of people are expected at the funeral ceremony, which is taking place without the presence of active authorities or military honors. The organization of the event has been the target of international criticism.

The European Union has already expressed its position on the matter. Brussels stated that any glorification of Mladić is "incompatible with the values on which the EU path is based," signaling that the episode may have repercussions on relations between Serbia and the European bloc.

Image of the day | The Mafra Station

The Mafra Station, located on the Oeste Line between Lisbon and Figueira da Foz, is about eight kilometres from the town of Mafra and preserves the nineteenth-century architecture typical of this centenary railway line. The most distinctive element of the station is its tile panels, created in 1934 by António de Castro Mourinho, Álvaro Pedro Gomes and Mário Salvador, depicting scenes from the region such as the Mafra Convent and the Tapada de Mafra. Forming part of a particular tradition of the Oeste Line, where several stations were decorated with tile panels, the Mafra Station represents an example of how this deeply Portuguese material was used to transform railway transit spaces into small galleries of folk art, constituting a living testament to an artistic and railway tradition that deserves to be preserved.
