The incident that prompted the ban happened at Ibrox Stadium, home of the Rangers, when the teams drew 0-0 and Celtic prevailed in the penalty shootout, winning 4-2. According to British broadcaster BBC, the volume of tickets sold to away fans was higher than usual due to the specific rules of the Scottish Cup. Approximately 8,000 Celtic fans were in the stands of the opposing team's stadium. The chaos began when away fans invaded the field after the penalty shootout decision.
