The potato is the new darling of healthy eating. "It should never have been demonized"

CNN Portugal5 September 2026 at 12:00

The potato, avoided in diets for years and even removed from soups, is now becoming one of the protagonists of the healthy recipe trend shared on social media. The tuber, which for decades was considered a food to avoid, is now regaining its place on the plates of those seeking a balanced diet.

Two nutritionists consulted about this trend confirm that the current popularity of the potato is nothing more than a passing fad, just as its previous avoidance was. According to the experts, the potato should never have been demonized in diet, since it is a nutritious food when prepared properly.

The phenomenon is closely linked to the impact of social media on the dissemination of food trends. Videos and posts featuring healthy recipes that include potato have gained great visibility, contributing to the change in public perception of this food.

However, the nutritionists warn that, although the rehabilitation of the potato is positive, it is important not to fall into excess. The method of preparation continues to be fundamental for the food to maintain its beneficial nutritional properties.

Lito Sousa: ANVISA authorizes import of experimental medication for influencer's treatment

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) authorized on Friday (4th) the exceptional import of the experimental medication ALN-6457, developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, for the treatment of influencer Lito Sousa, who lives with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and rapidly progressive neurological condition. The authorization was necessary because the pharmaceutical company does not have a legal representative in Brazil and the drug is not commercially registered with the agency, in addition to being in the pre-clinical study phase, meaning it has not yet been tested in humans with this condition. The request was made by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein after Lito was accepted for compassionate use of the treatment.

Why Brazil 'grew' in new map approved by the UN

Brazil appeared larger on a new world map approved by the United Nations (UN), due to an update of the global geodetic system (WGS84). The new cartography reduces distortions that shrank countries near the Equator line, such as Brazil, and enlarged territories near the poles. The correction benefits not only Brazil but also other tropical countries, and should impact areas such as navigation, telecommunications, and defense.

Mystery of how the Moon formed may be solved: it was born in just five hours after Earth's collision with a planet the size of Mars
