Why Brazil 'grew' in new map approved by the UN

BBC News Brasil5 September 2026 at 12:06

The United Nations approved a new world map that represents a significant change in the way the world is visualized cartographically.

The new map reduces the distortions that existed in previous projections, responsible for deforming the actual size of territories. Countries located near the Equator line appeared shrunk in traditional representations.

With the correction of these distortions, Brazil now appears with dimensions more adequate to its real territorial size on the new approved map.

Territories neighboring the poles, which were previously represented in an enlarged form due to distortions from conventional cartographic projections, now appear in more realistic proportions.

Lito Sousa: ANVISA authorizes import of experimental medication for influencer's treatment

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) authorized on Friday (4th) the exceptional import of the experimental medication ALN-6457, developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, for the treatment of influencer Lito Sousa, who lives with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and rapidly progressive neurological condition. The authorization was necessary because the pharmaceutical company does not have a legal representative in Brazil and the drug is not commercially registered with the agency, in addition to being in the pre-clinical study phase, meaning it has not yet been tested in humans with this condition. The request was made by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein after Lito was accepted for compassionate use of the treatment.

Mystery of how the Moon formed may be solved: it was born in just five hours after Earth's collision with a planet the size of Mars

A new scientific investigation suggests that the Moon may have formed in just five hours after a colossal collision between early Earth and a planet the size of Mars, about 4.5 billion years ago. This cataclysmic event ejected enough material to rapidly form our natural satellite, potentially resolving one of the greatest mysteries of planetary science.

Ocean heat waves have already claimed a land victim: children living in coastal cities

A study led by researchers from Penn State and the University of North Carolina, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed that marine heat waves — periods during which ocean surface temperature remains abnormally high — are affecting the health and survival of children in coastal communities in low- and middle-income countries. Climate change is impacting these communities that depend on the ocean for food and financial livelihood, with children being particularly vulnerable to the effects of ocean warming.
